Virginia is the political weathervane. The party that wins Virginia's governor's mansion in 2026 will set the narrative for the 2028 presidential race. And 11 House seats + a competitive AG race are on the ballot too.

October 13, 2026 (with same-day registration available)
Virginia is the political weathervane—literally. It's the only state that elects a governor the year after a presidential election, which means every four years, the entire country looks at Virginia to see which way the wind is blowing. In 2026, Virginia's governor's race will set the narrative for 2028. No pressure.
But it's not just the governor. Virginia also has 11 House seats, a competitive Attorney General race, Lieutenant Governor, and all 100 State House seats on the ballot. This is a full-slate election with national implications. And with same-day registration and 45 days of early voting, there's literally no excuse for not participating.
"Virginia is the state that tells you what happens next. The governor's race here has predicted the presidential outcome three out of the last four cycles. If that's not motivation to vote, what is?"

Virginia's governor's race in 2026 is open—no incumbent running. That means a wide-open field, massive spending, and national attention. The party that wins Virginia's governor's race has gone on to win the presidency three out of the last four cycles. This isn't a coincidence. Virginia is a purple state that reflects national trends.
The governor controls the state budget, appoints judges, and sets the policy agenda for four years. But more importantly, the governor's race is the headline that shapes the national narrative going into 2028. If Republicans win, the media calls it a rebuke of the president. If Democrats win, it's evidence the president's coalition is holding. Either way, your vote in Virginia is a national headline.
Virginia's AG race is competitive and consequential. The Attorney General is the state's chief law enforcement officer—they decide which laws to enforce, which lawsuits to file, and how to handle voting rights challenges. In a purple state like Virginia, the AG is often the check on the governor's power.
If you care about criminal justice, consumer protection, voting rights, or abortion access, the AG race matters as much as the governor's race. Don't skip it.
Virginia has 11 congressional districts, and several are competitive—particularly in the DC suburbs (NOVA), Hampton Roads, and Richmond. These suburban districts are where the House majority will be won or lost in 2026.
Virginia's 2nd and 7th districts were among the closest House races in 2024. Both were decided by fewer than 5,000 votes. If you live in one of these districts, your vote has outsized national impact.
Every seat in the Virginia House of Delegates is up in 2026. The chamber is currently split almost evenly—a handful of seats could flip the majority. The House of Delegates draws the maps. Whoever controls it after 2030 will shape Virginia's congressional districts for the next decade.
This is a down-ballot race with decade-long consequences. Pay attention.
Virginia voter action plan:
1. Register—and same-day registration is available. Go to elections.virginia.gov. Missed the October 13 deadline? You can still register and vote on the same day at your polling place. Bring proof of residence.
2. Vote early. September 19–November 1. 45 days of no-excuse early voting. Find your early voting site at your local registrar's office. No reason needed. Just go.
3. Vote the full ballot. Governor, AG, Lieutenant Governor, Congress, House of Delegates—all of it. The down-ballot races determine who draws the maps and who enforces the laws. Don't skip them.
4. Bring three people. Virginia's off-year governor races historically have lower turnout than presidential years. That makes your vote count even more. Drag someone with you.
"Virginia is the state the country watches to see what's coming next. In 2026, the country is watching you. Don't let them see apathy."
Virginia in 2026 is the weathervane election. An open governor's race that will set the narrative for 2028. Competitive House seats that could determine the national majority. An AG race that determines who enforces the laws. And a House of Delegates that will draw the maps for the next decade.
With 45 days of early voting and same-day registration, Virginia has removed every barrier to voting except your own motivation.
