How to Register to Vote in New Jersey

New Jersey uses a closed primary system. You must be registered with a recognized political party to vote in that party's primary. Unaffiliated voters may be able to choose a party ballot on primary day, depending on state rules.

You can register three ways:

- Online: Visit your state's Secretary of State or election board website
- By mail: Print and mail a registration form (available at most post offices, libraries, and DMV offices)
- In person: Register at your county election office, DMV, or designated registration sites

Voter ID Requirements in New Jersey

New Jersey has non-strict voter ID requirements. Most voters can vote by signing an affidavit or presenting a non-photo ID (such as a utility bill or bank statement with your name and address). First-time voters who registered by mail may need to show ID.

If you don't have an accepted ID, most states will let you cast a provisional ballot that will be counted if you bring ID to your election office within a few days. Don't let ID concerns stop you from showing up.

Vote-by-Mail and Early Voting in New Jersey

All registered voters in New Jersey receive a mail-in ballot automatically or can request one without an excuse. New Jersey is one of the most vote-by-mail-friendly states in the country. You can also vote early in person starting October 23, 2026.

If voting by mail, request your ballot at least two weeks before Election Day to ensure it arrives in time. Read your ballot carefully when it comes, mark your choices, and return it by the deadline (postmark does not count in all states — return it in person if you can).

What Is on the Ballot in New Jersey in 2026

The 2026 ballot in New Jersey will include:

- U.S. House: All of New Jersey's congressional districts
- U.S. Senate: Class II Senate seat
- State Legislature: All state Senate and House seats
- Down-ballot races: Attorney General, Secretary of State, state Supreme Court, county commissioners, judges, school boards, and ballot measures

State legislature control matters more than most people realize. State legislatures draw congressional maps, set abortion policy, decide school curriculum and funding, control voting rules, and pass state budgets. The people you elect in 2026 will make decisions that affect your daily life for the next decade.

Why Your Vote Matters in New Jersey in 2026

Midterm elections decide which party controls Congress for the final two years of a presidential term. They decide governors, secretaries of state (who run elections), attorneys general, state supreme courts, and state legislatures.

In New Jersey, every single statewide race will be decided by a margin smaller than the number of registered voters who didn't show up in the last midterm. You can flip the result of a U.S. House race, a state Senate race, or a governor's race just by being one of the people who votes when most people don't.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you your vote doesn't count or that the outcome is already decided. That kind of thinking is exactly what keeps the same people in power. Do your research, vote your values, and make sure your voice is heard.
