November 3, 2026
October 12, 2026
North Dakota voters have real power in 2026. The state's U.S. House delegation, Senate seat, Governor's office, and state legislature are all on the ballot. What happens in North Dakota in November 2026 will shape the state and the country for the next two years.
This guide covers every North Dakota-specific date, rule, and resource you need to register, vote by mail, vote early, or vote on Election Day. Bookmark it. Share it. Use it as a checklist.
"Every election is decided by the people who show up. Be one of them."
Primary Election: June 9, 2026
General Election: November 3, 2026
Voter Registration Deadline: October 12, 2026
Early Voting Begins: October 19, 2026
Mark these dates now. The single most common reason people don't vote is they forget. Set three phone reminders: one week before registration closes, one day before, and Election Day morning.
North Dakota uses a closed primary system. You must be registered with a recognized political party to vote in that party's primary. Unaffiliated voters may be able to choose a party ballot on primary day, depending on state rules.
You can register three ways:
- Online: Visit your state's Secretary of State or election board website
- By mail: Print and mail a registration form (available at most post offices, libraries, and DMV offices)
- In person: Register at your county election office, DMV, or designated registration sites

North Dakota has strict photo voter ID requirements. All voters must present an accepted photo ID at the polls. Acceptable forms typically include a state driver's license, state-issued non-driver ID, U.S. passport, military ID, or tribal ID. Check with your local election office for the full list before Election Day.
If you don't have an accepted ID, most states will let you cast a provisional ballot that will be counted if you bring ID to your election office within a few days. Don't let ID concerns stop you from showing up.
North Dakota offers no-excuse absentee voting. Any registered voter can request a mail-in ballot. You can also vote early in person starting October 19, 2026. Many counties also offer weekend and evening early voting hours.
If voting by mail, request your ballot at least two weeks before Election Day to ensure it arrives in time. Read your ballot carefully when it comes, mark your choices, and return it by the deadline (postmark does not count in all states — return it in person if you can).
The 2026 ballot in North Dakota will include:
- U.S. House: All of North Dakota's congressional districts
- U.S. Senate: Class II Senate seat
- Governor: The state's top executive office
- State Legislature: All state Senate and House seats
- Down-ballot races: Attorney General, Secretary of State, state Supreme Court, county commissioners, judges, school boards, and ballot measures
State legislature control matters more than most people realize. State legislatures draw congressional maps, set abortion policy, decide school curriculum and funding, control voting rules, and pass state budgets. The people you elect in 2026 will make decisions that affect your daily life for the next decade.
Midterm elections decide which party controls Congress for the final two years of a presidential term. They decide governors, secretaries of state (who run elections), attorneys general, state supreme courts, and state legislatures.
In North Dakota, every single statewide race will be decided by a margin smaller than the number of registered voters who didn't show up in the last midterm. You can flip the result of a U.S. House race, a state Senate race, or a governor's race just by being one of the people who votes when most people don't.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you your vote doesn't count or that the outcome is already decided. That kind of thinking is exactly what keeps the same people in power. Do your research, vote your values, and make sure your voice is heard.
